The Learning Center is available for students who have been identified with Learning Disabilities, have an Individualized Educational Program, and are in need of special instruction. When students come to the Learning Center, they work with Learning Center staff to develop skills to help them access the general education curriculum. This could be in areas such as written language, math, organization or study skills. We typically use the curriculum to help students address their goals. For example, a student with a Written Language goal may work on clarifying their written response to a social studies assignment or may start or revise an essay for English. The Learning Center also supports progress toward independent study skills and habits. We use guided instruction, teaching specific skills, practice and review to improve student learning. We also encourage students to develop responsibility for their own learning and completion of assignments.
Most students who attend the Learning Center come once per day or every other day. When it is included in their educational program, a student may come to the Learning Center to take tests or quizzes.
Staff is available in the Learning Center to help students during designated periods. Learning Center teachers also work in the regular education classrooms as academic support staff, helping all of the students in those classes to be more successful. In the Learning Center, the teachers work with all students at different times and are not specifically assigned to one student or another. Each Learning Center staff member brings different talents and abilities to their work with our students. Therefore, students benefit from interaction with different instructors and/or teachers in the Learning Center.
