(A minimum end of year average of C- is required for advancement to the next level.)
Emphasis in all levels is on the development of the four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - as well as on familiarity with the culture and people of Hispanic America and Spain. Spanish is the primary means of communication in the classroom. The following is a summary of the work covered in the Spanish program at Winchester High School.
3102 SPANISH 1 part 1 (9, 10, 11, 12) 5-5
Voces y Vistas Units 1-6. This course is intended for students with no previous background in Spanish and covers the same basic curriculum as Spanish in grade 7, plus a short reader.
3112 SPANISH 1 part 2 (9, 10, 11, 12) 5-5
Voces y Vistas Units 7-end. This course will cover the same basic curriculum as Spanish in grade 8 plus a reader.
3122 SPANISH 2 (9, 10, 11, 12) 5-5
Students successfully completing Spanish 7 and 8 will enter the Spanish program at this level. Pasos y Puentes text and accompanying materials will guide students toward functional communicative proficiency as well as to more fully appreciate the role of Hispanic cultures in a global context.
3132 SPANISH 3 (C1) (10, 11, 12) 5-5
Students in Spanish 3 will complete the Pasos y Puentes program including the accompanying reader and video components. The focus of the cultural studies is Latin America.
3143 SPANISH 4 (H) (11, 12) 5-5
Arcos y Alamedas as well as selections from other texts and videos including El Norte. Course covers a complete review of the first two levels of Spanish as well as an introduction to literature in Spanish. It is a proficiency-based course with the objective of improving oral communication, linguistic skills, and knowledge of literature. Upon successful completion of Spanish 4, students may go to Spanish 5 or AP Spanish. Admission to AP is selective and limited to those approved by the Coordinator of WorldLanguages.
3153 SPANISH 5 (H) (12) 5-5
Course covers advanced grammar (stressing the subjunctive) and reading comprehension. Students will finish the textbook Arcos y Alamedas. In addition, students will read two major works in literature. They will also be working on videos and other projects that will help students develop their oral proficiency, written expression and cultural awareness.
3164 ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH (AP) (12) 5-5
The AP course prepares the student for the Advanced Placement Examination in Spanish language and will include a basic introduction to Spanish and Latin American literature plus the intensive speaking, listening, reading and writing practice necessary for the AP exam in language.

Spanish Exchange
There is a Spanish exchange every other year to Northern Spain.
We go to Spain in April and they come here in September. We are undecided where we will be staying next year.
