3412 LATIN I (9, 10, 11, 12) 5-5

Latin I offers a foundation of grammatical principles, stressing the similarities and differences between English and Latin. Basic Latin vocabulary as found in Latin literature and in English derivatives is studied. An acquaintance is made with Roman life, traditions, and myths through reading in Latin, projects in English, and use of slides and filmstrips. Material covered includes three declensions of nouns and all tenses of regular conjugation verbs, active and passive.

3422 LATIN II (10, 11, 12) 5-5

Latin II includes a review of first-year grammar and introduces new grammatical material. It is expected that by the end of Latin II, students will have learned all the major grammatical constructions, enabling them to read increasingly more sophisticated Latin prose. Work on word derivations is continued to help with English vocabulary building. There is more emphasis placed on reading for comprehension and translating by context. Further work is also done with Roman history and mythology. 53

3432 LATIN III (C1) (11, 12) 5-5

Latin III consists primarily of translating and interpreting the original works of several Latin authors. Prose writing includes an adaptation of the play The Menaechmi by Plautus, letters of Pliny, philosophical works of Cicero, and poetry selections from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Attention is given to the historical, cultural, and literary features of the works. Previous grammar is reviewed as needed, however it is expected that students have a reasonably good command of Latin grammar upon entering the third year. A minimum amount of new grammar is introduced and vocabulary study is continued.
