3612 ITALIAN I (9, 10, 11, 12) 5-5
Italian I stresses the four skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing through a new functionally based text, Adesso. Basic grammatical structures include the present and past tense with emphasis on achieving personal expression. By the end of the year the students should be able to read simple passages and communicate on simple topics pertaining to their lives. The geography and culture are also covered.
3622 ITALIAN 2 (10, 11, 12) 5-5
Italian II continues the development of the four skills and introduces materials of increasing complexity. The student continues in the Adesso text, focusing on real life situations with supplemental readings, videos and projects. The grammar covered includes the future and the conditional tenses.
3632 ITALIAN 3 (C1) (11, 12) 5-5
Basic grammatical structures are reviewed, and a study of the verb tenses is completed with the subjunctive and compound tenses. The development of oral skills is stressed and the class is conducted primarily in Italian. There are weekly compositions and oral exposs on current events and topics of personal interest. Reading passages are discussed from contemporary Italian authors and from current Italian magazines.
3643 ITALIAN 4 (H) (12) 5-5
Italian IV will place much less emphasis on grammar and will involve more readings, writing assignments, and discussions. Italian fables, legends, plays, and short stories are read and discussed. The focal point will be a study of Italian writers and artists from the Renaissance to contemporary times. Original works will be read in class and the history of Italian contributions to civilization and culture will be traced. The fourth year students do a great deal of independent study as well as small group work
